Q. What is ROTC?
A. ROTC stands for Reserve Officers' Training Corps. It is a program of study leading to a presidential appointment as a second lieutenant in the United States Armed Forces.
Q. What is Military Science? A. Military Science is the name of the academic department that provides ROTC instruction at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The program includes a specified sequence of leadership, management, and professional knowledge classes as well as "hands on" leadership experience.
Q. By enrolling in ERAU ROTC, are you joining the Army?
A. No. Students who enroll in Army ROTC don't join the Army. They take an ROTC class for which they receive credit. It's considered a college elective.
Q. Is ERAU Army ROTC like "boot camp"? A. No. ROTC cadets go directly to college where they earn their degree.
Q. What can students expect to learn by taking ERAU Army ROTC?
A. Army ROTC will teach leadership and management skills needed to become a U.S. Army officer or have a successful civilian career.
Q. What makes ERAU Army ROTC different from regular college management courses?
A. Students in ROTC learn through a unique program that involves both classroom and training situations. For instance, an ROTC cadet might be found leading classmates through squad training exercises or negotiating land navigation courses.
Q. Is there a military obligation during college?
A. During the first two years, ROTC cadets have no military obligation (or the first year, in the case of scholarship winners).
Q. What is the ROTC course comprised of? A. The ROTC program is divided into phases: The Basic Course (Freshman and Sophomore Years) studies Army history, organization and structure. The techniques and principles of leadership and management are stressed throughout. The Advanced Course (Junior and Senior Years) concentrates on tactical operations and military instruction, as well as advanced techniques of management, leadership, and command.
Q. Does ERAU Army ROTC offer scholarships?
A. Yes. Army ROTC awards scholarships to students taking any major Embry-Riddle offers. However, an Army ROTC scholarship will not cover any flight instruction.
Q. How much money does ERAU Army ROTC usually award and what does the money go towards?
A. An ERAU Army ROTC scholarship is worth $156,000. The scholarship covers full tuition and mandatory fees, $1200 for books per year and a monthly spending allowance (stipend) of $300 to $500 depending on what academic year you are in (Freshman= $300, Sophomore=$350, Junior=$450, Senior=$500). Incoming scholarship students are eligible for a $7,500 Room and Board scholarship every year given by the University if the ROTC scholarship was awarded while you are in High School (4- year and 3-year Advanced Designee). Q. On what basis are scholarship winners chosen?
A. ROTC scholarships are awarded on merit. They are NOT BASED ON FINANCIAL NEED. Merit is exhibited in academic achievement and extracurricular activities such as sports, student government or part-time work. See SAL
Q. Can only scholarship winners enroll in ERAU Army ROTC?
A. No. Anyone can enroll in ROTC, regardless of whether you're a scholarship winner or not. All equipment is furnished at not cost to you.
Q. How often are Army ROTC scholarships awarded?
A. Scholarships are awarded once a year for high school students. Students apply by November 15 and selections are made continuously thru May 15. Four-year scholarship applications must be requested between March 1 & November 1. If you are already on campus, two-year and three-year scholarships are often available.
Q. How do students benefit from ERAU Army ROTC?
A. In college and after graduation, cadets find that the training and experience they have received are assets - whether pursuing an Army or civilian career. Employers place high regard on the management and leadership skills that ROTC instructors stress. Additionally, ROTC looks great on a resume. When cadets complete the ROTC course, upon graduation, they become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army.
Q. Does military science count as a "minor"?
A. Participation and graduation from Army ROTC will give students a minor in Defense Studies upon graduation from Embry-Riddle.
