Mathematics Placement for
Daytona Beach Campus

Home Page for Entering Students

Introduction

The Department of Mathematics strongly urges entering students to thoroughly review all of the material presented in this website. Placement into an appropriate mathematics course at Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach Campus requires your active participation.

Our Goal

Because our entering students have a wide variety of mathematical backgrounds and abilities, the Department of Mathematics offers a variety of mathematics courses for incoming freshmen. Our goal is the proper placement of each freshman into an appropriate mathematics course based on each student's ability and program of study.

We believe the responsibility of registering a student for the correct course is shared between the University and the student.

Your Responsibilities

In order to ensure proper placement into your first mathematics course you should take the following steps:

  • Make sure all high school transcripts have been submitted to the University.

  • If you are transferring from another college or university, submit those transcripts also.

  • Make sure that you understand the mathematics requirements of your degree program.

  • Review all of the pages of this Web site and make sure that you understand the placement process. At various stages you will want to refer back to this site for additional information.

  • If you have not completed four years of college preparatory math in high school or it has been a long time since you have taken a mathematics course, you may wish to enroll into a preparatory mathematics course at a local college before arriving on campus. This may save you time and money in the long run. Bring with you any grade reports from previous institutions, copies of transcripts, AP Exam scores, International Baccalaureate Exam scores, or CLEP Exam scores. This is especially important if you received any of these results late or during the summer.

Math Placement Using High School Transcripts

Initially, ERAU's Records and Registration Office will attempt to place you into the appropriate course by examining your latest records and transcripts. Many new students are placed into a freshmen mathematics course based upon high school or college records of past performance in mathematics. If you are placed into a mathematics course by this method, you will be registered by the Records and Registration Office and you will be sent a schedule of classes for your first term before your orientation.

Prerequisite Knowledge Requirements

If you are placed into a mathematics course using this method, you should review the freshman course descriptions (see the catalog) and verify from the prerequisite knowledge requirements that you are ready to take the course. It is your responsibility to know all of the prerequisite knowledge for the course or courses for which you are registered. All students will be required to pass a prerequisite knowledge evaluation during the first week of class. Students failing this exam will be asked to move to a lower level class.

Mathematics Placement Evaluation Options

Most students will take the Mathematics Placement Evaluation prior to arrival on campus (online) or during orientation. This evaluation will allow proper placement in the math class required for your degree program. If the results of your Mathematics Placement evaluation indicate that you should be enrolled in a different class, you may follow the drop/add process to change your schedule to include a different mathematics class. Please note that the Mathematics Placement evaluation may only be taken once, so be prepared to take it when you arrive on campus.

Mathematics Placememnt Evaluation

Introduction

The Mathematics Placement evaluation has been designed to help place you in a mathematics class of the appropriate level for your ability and background. If we are unable to determine your placement by examining your transcripts and other admissions data, you may be required to take the Math Placement evaluation.

If you are not required to take the placement evaluation, you may decide to take it during orientation week in order to obtain a better placement. If you are already registered for a mathematics course and the placement evaluation indicates that you are prepared for a higher level course, you may drop the lower course and add the higher level course during the regular drop/add period. You may also elect to take a lower level course, if the placement evaluation indicates a lower course may be appropriate.

Purpose of the Mathematics Placement Evaluation

The purpose of the evaluation is to determine the level of mathematical course work in the students program that the student is likely to complete successfully.

Description of the Mathematics Placement Evaluation

Our placement evaluation is a customized computer based evaluation, and it is administered in one of our computer labs. You will be given the results of the evaluation immediately. You should come prepared with two pencils.

Calculators

Calculators are not required for the evaluation. However, you may, if you wish, use a scientific calculator. You may not use a graphing/programmable calculator

Mathematics Placement Evaluation Topics

Many topics from high school mathematics are included on the placement evaluation. The questions are chosen from beginning algebra, intermediate algebra, advanced algebra, pre-calculus, and trigonometry. There are no calculus topics on the placement evaluation. If you have taken AP Calculus, click here to see related information.

Here is a partial list of general topics, which you may wish to review before taking the placement evaluation: polynomial algebra, properties of exponents, algebraic fractions, logarithms, solving equations and inequalities, functions, graphing, exponential expressions and functions, linear systems of equations, solving algebra word problems, direct and inverse variation, conics, real and complex numbers, basic right triangle trigonometry, radians, vectors, graphing the various trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, inverse trigonometric functions, the unit circle, solving trigonometric equations, polar coordinates, and the trigonometric form of complex numbers.

Mathematics Online Evaluation MOE

The Mathematics Department, with encouragement and support from other University departments, has developed and implemented a math online placement tool. This tool is offered to all incoming (accepted) first year students. Students may take the evaluation at home or wherever they are most comfortable. By offering MOE early, students have a schedule before arriving on campus, avoiding problems with last minute scheduling. MOE also allows for students who place below first semester level mathematics a chance to remediate during the summer at home or during summer B on campus.

The MOE is part of a comprehensive retention effort by the Mathematics Department. That effort includes course work tailored to the needs and abilities of participating students. The Mathematics Awareness Program provides for self pacing, tutoring and remediation when necessary. Accurate placement using MOE and course work tailored to the individual student, offer students the greatest chance for success in mathematics and subsequent ERAU courses.
