Daytona Beach Campus - College of Engineering

Civil Engineering Department

Mission Statement

The role of the Civil Engineering Department in fulfilling the University's commitment is to provide a comprehensive education to graduates for productive careers with special emphasis on the needs of aviation/civil engineering needs. The department's role is to educate students in subjects dealing with the planning, analysis, and design of (a) general civil engineering structures with emphasis in the core areas of transportation, structures, materials, and geotechnical engineering; (b) and aviation transportation facilities, including the planning, design, and operation of airports, terminals, and the supporting facilities.

The department offers a program of study which its constituents have deemed appropriate for civil engineering entry-level career preparation. The department's courses constitute the engineering core and electives for the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Core engineering courses are taken from the Engineering Sciences and supplemented with required core Civil Engineering courses. Design courses in the four core civil engineering areas are required, but the student is allowed to choose courses based on interests and offerings.

The primary mission of the Civil Engineering Department is to offer its courses effectively and regularly enough that civil engineering students can make reasonable progress towards their degrees. Quality of instruction and adherence to the accreditation criteria of the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) are paramount. Therefore, the department must maintain a properly credentialed and capable faculty who willingly teach in their areas of expertise and who ably advise students on academic as well as career matters.

The faculty are expected to be involved in research, grants or outside professional activity to the extent that such activity supports the educational programs of the University and keeps the faculty and the curriculum current and in tune with the needs of the civil engineering industry.

Goals of the Civil Engineering Program:

1. To produce graduates who are prepared for immediate productivity in the field of civil engineering and understand the need for continued personal and professional growth.

2. To produce graduates who are capable of working effectively in interdisciplinary teams on complex problems facing society.

3. To provide a broad education with an emphasis on communication and analytic skills.

4. To produce graduates who are capable of applying the results of civil engineering research and development to contemporary problems.

Educational Objectives of the Civil Engineering Program:

1. Provide an educational experience that prepares students for the challenges of contemporary civil engineering and to provide the ability to adapt to changes in the profession.

2. Provide opportunities for students to develop problem solving, team-building skills, and leadership skills.
