Eagles Flight Team Wins Big in 2010 Southeast Region Competition

Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 17, 2010 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Eagles flight team earned top honors in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s Southeastern Region Competition Nov. 9-13 in Hollywood, Fla.

The Eagles flight team, representing the university’s Daytona Beach campus, won first place in six of the eight events, scoring 70 percent higher overall than the second place team. The victory marks the 25th consecutive year the Embry-Riddle team has won the regional competition.

According to the Eagles’ head coach Les Westbrooks and assistant coach Derek Herchko, gusty crosswinds on the day of the landing competition gave the team an opportunity to use every flying skill they had learned and shine even brighter.

“Words are inadequate to describe how well our team performed,” Westbrooks said. “While other teams were going around because of the challenging flight conditions, our students were planning and executing safe and exact landings.”

Winning the regional event qualifies the Eagles flight team for the national championship competition, which will be held at Ohio State University in May 2011.
