Topics Range from Aerospace and Water to Peace and Quiet in Embry-Riddle Distinguished Speakers Program

Arun Gandhi Daytona Beach, Fla., Sept. 23, 2010 -- This fall, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University invites the peace activist grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, a veteran aerospace industry executive, an expert on the historical role of water, and an advocate for turning down life’s volume to the podium for its 2010-2011 Honors Program Distinguished Speaker Series, which runs from October through February.

All events in the speaker series are scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Gale Lemerand Auditorium, Willie Miller Instructional Center, at Embry-Riddle, located at 600 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Norman Augustine Monday, Oct. 11: Arun Gandhi, international peace activist, author, professor, and founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, who lived with his grandfather Mahatma Gandhi from 1946 to 1948, will speak on “Lessons from Grandfather.”

Monday, Nov. 22: Norman Augustine will speak on “Aerospace: Past, Present, and Future.” Listed as “One of 50 Great Americans” by Who’s Who, Augustine was recently chairman of the Review of United States Human Space Flight Plans Committee. He also previously served as chairman and CEO of Martin Marietta Corp., president and CEO of Lockheed Martin, professor at Princeton University, and chairman of the Academy of Engineering.

Steven Solomon Monday, Jan. 31: Steven Solomon will speak on “Water: the Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization,” the title of his most recent book (Harper Collins). Solomon is a writer for the New York Times, Business Week, The Economist, Forbes, and Esquire, and a regular commentator on NPR’s Marketplace. He also has been a featured guest on the late Tim Russert’s CNBC show, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, Bloomberg TV, and on many other news shows.

George Michelsen Foy Monday, Feb. 28: George Michelsen Foy will speak on the subject of his latest book, "Zero Decibels: The Search for Absolute Silence" (Simon & Schuster), reflecting on his study of noise, the environment, and self and community. Foy teaches creative writing at New York University and has been published by Viking Penguin, Doubleday, Harper’s, Rolling Stone, and other magazines.
