Embry-Riddle Hosts Women in Math Day for Volusia County High School Students

Daytona Beach, Fla., April 2, 2009 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will host its annual Women in Math Day on Friday, April 17, for female high school students in Volusia County and their mathematics teachers. The event, which promotes careers for women in mathematics, science, and engineering, will be held at the University’s Daytona Beach, Fla., campus in Room 101 of the Willie Miller Instructional Center. It is restricted to registered participants and news media.

Program:

9-9:10 a.m. Welcome and introduction by Nirmal Aggarwal, professor of mathematics at Embry-Riddle, and Cindy Oakley-Paulik, director of the Embry-Riddle Women’s Center
9:15-10 Workshop presentation by Rebecca Torzone
10:15-11:45 Games and competitions for students
Noon-1 p.m. Boxed lunch and panel discussion
1-1:30 Awards, evaluation, and closing
1:30-2:20 Tour of Embry-Riddle campus and facilities

Workshop Presenter:

Rebecca Torzone is a systems engineering manager at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems. She works on large-scale, end-to-end simulations and analyzes the performance results. She is the expert on radar for her team. She recently was selected to take part in Northrop Grumman’s Systems Engineering Associate Program, which will begin with a six-month assignment with the DEEPWATER WPC program, a joint venture with Lockheed Martin to develop a fast-response cutter, a composite ship. Torzone graduated from Embry-Riddle in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics. She also earned a master’s degree in 1999 in Computer Science from Colorado Technical University and recently a second master’s degree in Aeronautical Science, concentrating in Human Factors, from Embry-Riddle.

This event is co-sponsored by Embry-Riddle’s Office of Diversity Initiatives and Office of the Provost and by the Association of Women in Math Grant, funded by Elizabeth City State University and the National Security Agency.
