NEWS RELEASE
Phone: 386-226-6525 Embry-Riddle Honors Fallen Alumni with War Veterans Memorial PlaqueDaytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 7, 2007 -- In honor of its 20 alumni who have lost their lives in the war against terrorism since Sept. 11, 2001, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will dedicate a War Veterans Memorial Plaque. The plaque will be permanently placed in a garden-like setting at the center of campus near the Legacy Walk and the Miller Instructional Center during a Veterans Day Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. An all-services Embry-Riddle ROTC composite unit and Color Guard will present Honors in a brief ceremony that will include a reading of the names of the 20 alumni by a cadet. The public is invited to attend. “A number of Embry-Riddle alumni work in careers associated with national defense and the aviation industry,” said Wayne Munson, Executive Director of Alumni Relations. “In light of our mission to educate and support those who defend this great nation, we are determined to acknowledge and honor those in our Embry-Riddle family who have made the ultimate sacrifice.” The War Veterans Memorial Plaque was conceived by U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Robert Clark, a former Air Force ROTC cadet at Embry-Riddle, in response to inquiries from students about the contribution of Embry-Riddle alumni to the war on terror. “We wanted to commission a memorial plaque to be dedicated in a place of honor on campus as an inspiration to all,” he said. Dr. Thomas Connolly, Chancellor of Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus, spoke for all when he authorized the memorial to be created. He wrote, “The names of our fallen alumni will be forever visible to all our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors as a statement of our appreciation for the professional and personal sacrifices of our fallen alumni, and as a reminder of the cost of our freedom.” The plaque, designed by Granite Art Design of New York and brought to completion by students working with the Alumni Relations Office, includes the logos of the Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice.
