Dr. Karen HolbrookDaytona Beach, Fla., April 27, 2007 -- The Spring Commencement Ceremony for 650 students of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 7, at the Ocean Center.

The guest speaker is Dr. Karen Holbrook, president of Ohio State University, who recently served as a member of Embry-Riddle’s Board of Trustees and President’s Advisory Board. She will receive the Eagle of Aviation Award in recognition of her significant contributions to aviation.

Dr. Holbrook has been the president of Ohio State, the largest university in the nation, since 2002. Ohio State is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the country’s top 20 public universities, with a reputation for excellence in both academics and athletics.

Since she took office, Dr. Holbrook has made cutting-edge research a priority and an integral part of the educational process at all levels of the university. As a result, Ohio State’s sponsored research funding has topped $652 million, an all-time high. In the category of research expenditures, the National Science Foundation ranks Ohio State eighth in the nation among public universities.

At Dr. Holbrook’s initiative, Ohio State has targeted $100 million for 10 high-impact research projects, such as climate change and public health preparedness, bringing to bear the intellectual resources of the university in helping solve global problems.

As a champion of expanding the undergraduate research experience, Dr. Holbrook has led the effort to offer freshman seminars and provide research opportunities for undergraduates in every college of the university and has overseen the establishment of the Office of Undergraduate Research.

Dr. Holbrook is the recipient of many awards and honors, including most recently the YWCA Women of Achievement Award in 2006, the Empowered Woman Award from the Women President’s Organization in 2006, and the President’s Award for Leadership in Technology Development from TechColumbus in 2007.

Before joining Ohio State, Dr. Holbrook held executive-level positions at the University of Georgia and the University of Florida. She spent the majority of her academic career as a professor of biological structure and medicine at the University of Washington, School of Medicine.

She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in zoology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and a Ph.D. in biological structure from the University of Washington, School of Medicine, where she pursued postdoctoral training in the Department of Medicine, Division of Dermatology.
