Embry-Riddle Chancellor Announces Retirement

Dan CarrellPrescott, Ariz., Feb. 1, 2007 -- Dan Carrell, chancellor of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Ariz., campus, has announced that he will retire on July 1, 2007, after more than seven years as the campus’ top administrator.

“Embry-Riddle has been an important part of my life for more than 20 years. It’s a special place, and the students, faculty, staff, and alumni are some of the most extraordinary people I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. Serving the university as chancellor has been an honor. We’ve faced some tough challenges and experienced real progress. I’m proud to have been a part of it all. I feel lucky to have served the university and I look forward to this new chapter in our relationship,” says Dan Carrell.

Carrell started at the university in 1986 as a member of the enrollment management team and as director of development. Over the years, he served as chairman of the flight training department and also the aeronautical science department. Prior to serving as chancellor of the campus, Carrell was the director of business and administration. He became chancellor of the Prescott campus in 2000.

Carrell’s accomplishments as chancellor of the Prescott campus are many. During his tenure as chancellor, seven new degree programs were added to the academic offerings at Prescott, including the Master of Science in Safety Science. Two intercollegiate athletic programs, men’s and women’s soccer, were added to the sports roster. Also under Carrell’s leadership, Embry-Riddle upgraded its fleet of aircraft with the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast capability, a state-of-the-art safety guidance system, as well as adding Level 6 Frasca flight simulators at the flight training department.

Perhaps Carrell’s biggest legacy has been the tremendous growth of the physical infrastructure of the campus. The 48,000-sq.-ft. Academic Complex, the Aerospace Experimentation and Fabrication Laboratory (AXFAB), and the new Visitors Center were built and opened under Carrell’s leadership. A new main entrance was also constructed, as was the soccer field and track.

“Dan Carrell has been at the center of the greatest expansion in the history of the Prescott campus, and his retirement as chancellor leaves us with the daunting task of finding a worthy replacement,” said Dr. John P. Johnson, president of Embry-Riddle. “The good news is that we are not losing Dan completely. He will continue as a faculty member in the College of Aviation with added responsibilities as special assistant to the president.”

Before joining Embry-Riddle, Carrell served as the senior counsel/advisor at the Defense Language Institute in San Franscisco, Calif., and as chief instructor/deputy director of the Department of Combat Operations at the U.S. Army School of the Americas, Ft. Gulick, in the Republic of Panama.

Carrell is a retired U.S. Army infantry officer and military aviator who completed two combat tours in the Republic of Vietnam.

He plans to keep busy after retiring as chancellor. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family, traveling, and doing some things I’ve always wanted to do,” says Carrell.

Embry-Riddle will conduct a national search for the Prescott chancellor position.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world’s largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, offers more than 30 degree programs in its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Aviation, Business, and Engineering.
