Martin Smith Named Chancellor of Embry-Riddle’s Extended Campus

Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 29, 2005 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is pleased to announce that Martin Smith is the new chancellor of its Extended Campus.

As chancellor, Smith serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Extended Campus and is responsible for overall planning, resource allocation, and program evaluation, with special emphasis on pursuing the important market in noncredit education. He works closely with Embry-Riddle’s president, the chancellors of the university’s residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and the Extended Campus leadership team.

Each year, the Extended Campus provides fully accredited Embry-Riddle courses and programs to more than 17,000 professionals working in civilian and military aviation and aerospace careers.

“I am committed to strengthening the already excellent credit course offerings that are provided through the Extended Campus at more than 130 locations in the United States and Europe,” Smith said.

“I also aim to aggressively pursue the market in noncredit education,” Smith continued, “to establish Embry-Riddle as the premier provider of such services to the aviation and aerospace industry, to excel in student services, and to achieve continuous improvement in academic programs and in the quality of delivery through the use of the latest technologies.”

Before his appointment, Smith served since last May as interim chancellor of the Extended Campus after Robert “Skip” Myers left the chancellor position to become president of Daniel Webster College.

Smith joined Embry-Riddle in 1999 as chief information officer, with responsibility for strategic information technology initiatives, projects, and organizations serving all Extended Campus locations worldwide and the residential campuses in Daytona Beach and Prescott.

Prior to that, Smith had 25 years experience in higher education, including senior management positions at the University of Massachusetts system and Boston College, as well as experience in private business, teaching, and consulting.

Smith holds an MBA from Western New England College and a bachelor of business administration degree in quantitative methods from the University of Massachusetts.

Embry-Riddle, the world’s largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, offers more than 30 degree programs in its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Aviation, Business, and Engineering. Embry-Riddle educates more than 30,000 students annually in undergraduate and graduate programs at residential campuses in Prescott, Ariz., and Daytona Beach, Fla., through the Extended Campus at more than 130 teaching centers in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, and through distance learning.
