Embry-Riddle’s Frances Greene Named to Volusia Manufacturers Association Board

Dr. Fran GreeneDaytona Beach, Fla., Dec. 9, 2005 -- Dr. Fran Greene, chair of the Department of Human Factors and Systems at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, has become a Volusia Manufacturers Association (VMA) Board member for 2006.

Greene will be installed as one of the 15-member board at the Jan. 26 meeting.

The VMA was founded in 1980 to provide information, education, and networking to the management and personnel of its member companies. Another objective is to support quality education at all levels and seek programs that provide job skills needed. A third objective is to develop industrial relations projects to enhance management/labor cooperation.

Greene says becoming a member of the VMA board will allow her to contribute to the board’s goals and also to bring a greater awareness of Embry-Riddle to the group.

“It will allow manufacturers in Volusia County to understand that Embry-Riddle is not a flight school, but a comprehensive university with a focus on aviation and aerospace,” Greene said. “Many people do not know that we have great human factors and ergonomics, engineering, physics, business, and other exceptional academic programs.”

Greene said she plans to find opportunities for co-op experiences, as well as internships, in local companies.

“This partnership will foster a win/win situation for our students, while manufacturers will have an excellent labor infusion. My department is always looking for student projects where we assign seniors to tackle and solve real-world human factors related problems, ergonomics, and job redesign to enhance the company’s bottom line,” Greene said. “What a great partnership for the community, especially because the student projects are free to participating manufacturers.”

Companies that Embry-Riddle students have worked with in the past include ACT Corp., Boston Whaler, and Ball Products.

“As education director, I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to make it possible for our students to help make a difference in the everyday operations of Volusia County manufacturers, regardless of size and number of employees,” Greene said.

Greene received her B.S. degree from Wright State University, her master degree from Ohio State University, and her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world’s largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, offers more than 30 degree programs in its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Aviation, Business, and Engineering. Embry-Riddle educates more than 30,000 students annually in undergraduate and graduate programs at residential campuses in Prescott, Ariz., and Daytona Beach, Fla., through the Extended Campus at more than 130 centers in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, and through distance learning.
