Former Sen. Jake Garn to Speak at Embry-Riddle Commencement in Utah

Jake Garn Daytona Beach, Fla., April 15, 2005 -- Former U.S. senator and retired Utah Air National Guard Brig. Gen. Jake Garn will be the featured speaker at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Northern Utah Center’s graduation, Saturday, May 7. The ceremony for 26 students will be held at Hill Air Force Base’s Club Hill Ballroom at 4:30 p.m.

Garn served as mayor of Salt Lake City prior to his election to the U.S. Senate in 1974. In the Senate, Garn served six years as chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, was a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and served as chairman for six years of the VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies Subcommittee. He also served on the Construction, Defense, Energy and Water Development, Interior, and Military subcommittees.

In November 1984, Garn was invited by NASA to fly as a payload specialist on flight 51-D of the space shuttle Discovery. During the seven-day mission, he performed various medical tests. Garn received the prestigious aviation award, the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy.

Garn retired from the U.S. Senate in 1993 after three terms to return to Utah.
