Department of Veterans Affairs Approves Education Benefits for Embry-Riddle CAPT Flight Training Program

Daytona Beach, Fla., Sept. 15, 2005 -- The Commercial Airline Pilot Training (CAPT) program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has received approval from the Department of Veterans Affairs to train veterans at its flight training facility in Bunnell, Fla. The new state-of-the-art flight training facility is located at the Flagler County Airport 23 miles north of Embry-Riddle’s campus in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“We are pleased to announce that those who have earned veterans education benefits may now use those benefits to help accomplish their dream of an airline career,” said Martin Schaaf, executive director of the CAPT program. “The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has recognized our commitment to continuing flight education.”

Those who signed up for the Montgomery GI Bill while in the military may be eligible to receive up to 60% reimbursement for flight training in the CAPT program. The approved courses include Commercial Pilot, Instrument Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, Certified Flight Instructor Instrument, and MD-90 Type Rating training. Embry-Riddle’s Veterans Affairs Office will certify training at the beginning of the month for all training completed during the previous month.

Of the CAPT program’s 31 graduates, 26 have been hired by regional airlines, by Focus Air Cargo (B-747), or have found a corporate position and have a seniority number at their airline. The seniority number is an important tool used for professional advancement throughout one’s career. The five remaining graduates are awaiting interview invitations.

The CAPT program is global in scope, but centralized in its commitment to meeting the goal of preparing students to become exceptional airline pilots. The program is a fully integrated approach to airline training that exceeds all standard requirements for employment. In the jet transition curriculum, students receive actual Boeing jetliner cockpit experience. Cadets spend nearly 100 hours in a full-motion Boeing MD-90 EFD (enhanced flight display) flight simulator, earning a captain’s Type Rating. Completion of this training component demonstrates to the airlines that CAPT graduates are capable of making the decisions required of a captain.
