Embry-Riddle Welcomes Siobhan Tiernan, Fulbright Scholar

Siobhan Tiernan Daytona Beach, Fla., May 24, 2004 -- Fulbright Scholar Siobhan Tiernan will join the faculty at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Daytona Beach, Fla., campus for the 2004-2005 academic year. She is a lecturer in aviation management in the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick, Ireland.

The Irish Fulbright Commission granted the scholarship to Tiernan based on her research proposal titled "Scheduled Airlines in the EU and USA - A Comparative Analysis of Current and Future Strategies." During her stay at Embry-Riddle, she will be a member of the Department of Management, Marketing, Strategy, and Operations in the College of Business.

Tiernan's area of research is concerned with analyzing the strategies of scheduled airlines in Europe and the United States, using a resource-based view of a firm, coupled with positioning theories, to evaluate its future competitive advantage.

"We are thrilled to have Dr. Tiernan join us as a scholar and a teacher," said Mike Williams, acting dean of the College of Business at Embry-Riddle. "Her background and experience will not only complement our ongoing research efforts, but will also provide a fresh perspective in areas such as low-cost carriers and international airline strategies."

In 1995, Tiernan's dissertation at the University of Limerick, where she received her Ph.D., was a study of how recent economic liberalization in Europe allowed Aer Lingus to change its business model and emerge as one of Europe's leading low-cost air carriers.

In 1991, Tiernan and Robin Wilson, who later became joint chief operating officer of TWA, were commissioned by the Irish government to develop a strategy for the expansion of the Irish aerospace sector in the Shannon region.

Tiernan maintains an active cadre of research students, whose topics include strategies of low-cost airlines, charter airlines, and tour operators; elimination of travel agents as intermediaries and the impact on industry structure; the role of airline resources in contributing to organizational performance; airline market orientation; franchising and strategic alliances; and crisis management.

Tiernan is principal author of the leading undergraduate management textbook in Ireland and is course director for the bachelor of business studies program at the University of Limerick. She is a regular contributor to professional conferences and journals.

The Irish Fulbright Commission finances study, research, teaching, and other educational activities between Ireland and the United States.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of students and industry through its educational, training, research, and consulting activities.
