Rock Group Sugar Ray and Full Slate of Air and Sea Acts to Perform at Wings & Waves 2003

Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 1, 2003 -- "Fly" group Sugar Ray will bring its versatile sound to the Daytona Beach Bandshell Saturday evening, Nov. 8, as the California-based rockers perform for the huge Wings & Waves 2003 audience.

Sugar Ray's giant hit "Fly" in 1997 was followed by hit singles "Every Morning," "Someday" and "Falls Apart." The group's late 90s albums Floored and 14:59 sold two and three million copies (double-platinum and triple-platinum) respectively.

Sugar Ray was formed in 1992 by guitarist Rodney Sheppard, bassist Murphy Karges, drummer Stan Frazier, and lead singer Mark McGrath. The foursome had been part of the heavy metal band Shrinky Dinx. Craig Bullock, aka DJ Homicide, joined the group a short time later.

The band played at Woodstock '99 and performed on Run-D.M.C.'s Crown Royal album. In 2000, McGrath made his acting debut portraying a doctor on the NBC drama "ER."

"We are thrilled to have a performance group of this caliber join our Wings & Waves entertainment line-up," said Ossie Benitah, Embry-Riddle's director of Student Activities. "Sugar Ray brings a sound that should appeal to almost everyone."

The Embry-Riddle Student Government Association is sponsoring Sugar Ray's appearance at the event.

More than 250,000 people are expected to attend Wings & Waves: Embry-Riddle Celebrates the Centennial of Flight, Nov. 8 and 9.

Headlining the aerial portion of the air and sea show will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, who have thrilled audiences with their heart stopping maneuvers for 50 years. Other featured performers include Patti Wagstaff, Gene Soucy, Teresa Stokes, Eric Beard, Kirby Chambliss, Michael Goulian, Lee Lauderback, Julie Clark and Mike Mancuso. These current and former aerobatic champions form a who's who of air show performers. Also featured will be the Misty Blues All-Woman Skydiving Team, whose members boast 40,000 jumps and hold 33 world records.

Additional aerial highlights include tactical demonstrations by an L-39 European jet trainer, and by United States Air Force F-15 and United States Navy F-18 aircraft. These aircraft will demonstrate their full spectrum of capabilities including high-speed flight and low-speed passes with the landing gear down. Numerous flybys from military and civilian aircraft, including the renowned F-117 stealth fighter, will complete the schedule.

The "Waves" segments will feature three different search and rescue (SAR) operations and high performance offshore race boat demonstrations.

The first SAR will be performed by the U.S. Air Force and demonstrates how a pilot can parachute from a C-130 Hercules simulating being ejected from the aircraft. The parachutist will land in the ocean several hundred feet offshore. Two A-10 close air support aircraft will be flying cover to protect the pilot from hostile fire before and during the helicopter rescue operation. The helicopter rescue team will drop into the water and hoist the downed pilot into the safety of the helicopter. The segment will conclude with a multi-aircraft demonstration of refueling capabilities.

The United States Coast Guard performs the second search and rescue demonstration with a simulated rescue of stranded personnel from the deck of a Coast Guard Cutter. Using a winch, the stranded personnel will be brought on board a USCG helicopter.

The final SAR will be performed by the Volusia County Sheriff's Department, and the Volusia County Beach Patrol. The county units will demonstrate how to rescue victims of a swamped boat. Lifeguards using a jet ski with sled and stretchers transport the victims to the beach where an ambulance will be waiting to rush them to the hospital.

A high-speed offshore racing exhibition is another showcase "Waves" act and will feature six offshore racers in a simulated drag race. The racers will display their high-speed and massive horsepower over a two-mile course.
