National Award Honors Embry-Riddle for Information Technology Successes

Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 11, 2003 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has received a national award for information technology from the Sara Fine Institute for Interpersonal Behavior and Technology at the University of Pittsburgh.

The Award for Information Technology Success and Best Practices in Higher Education for 2003 was granted to Embry-Riddle for its implementation of three successful information technology projects that deliver Web-based services and academic courses to students, faculty, and staff at all of its locations.

In the first project, Embry-Riddle developed and implemented a flight-training management system, called Flight ETA, for the scheduling and tracking of flight students and instructors, flights, training aircraft, tests, and test results.

The second project is a system called ERAU Online, which Embry-Riddle developed for delivering academic courses to students via the Web. The university also uses the system to deliver courses to personnel in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.

The third project involved the implementation of software applications for human resources and enterprise resource planning by the university.

"This recognition for best practice is truly a university award for strategic planning and implementation for successful outcomes," said Martin Smith, chief information officer at Embry-Riddle. "It recognizes our leadership as a leading-edge, high-tech, high-touch institution and the hard work of our staff."

The awards, which were given to 12 U.S. universities and colleges, resulted from a national study conducted by the Sara Fine Institute, with support from the Collegis Leadership Alliance.

The study examines how academic executives at various institutions define success for information technology activities: what drives their IT-related agendas, how important they perceive IT to be in achieving strategic institutional goals, how IT is organized, and how successful IT programs are defined. The study also identifies the key elements of different IT environments and best practices, along with specific examples of successful projects.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of students and industry through its educational, training, research, and consulting activities. Embry-Riddle educates more than 25,000 students annually through the master's level at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., at more than 130 teaching centers in the United States and Europe, and through distance learning.
