Embry-Riddle Introduces New Security Degree ProgramPrescott, Ariz., April 17, 2003 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has added a new degree program to its offerings at the Prescott, Ariz., campus. The Bachelor of Science in Global Security and Intelligence Studies (GSIS) will begin in Fall 2003. The program is designed to develop future security and intelligence professionals with a broad understanding of global interrelationships in politics, economics, science and technology, social change, the psychological dimensions of military and terrorist threats, and environmental issues, among other topics. Security and intelligence requirements have expanded in the United States since the first attack on the World Trade Center in New York City in 1993. A number of universities are including various professional security studies in their academic programs. However, most universities only offer security and intelligence studies solely at the certificate level or with established international security studies. "The program is quite unique at the undergraduate level. It is a full four-year baccalaureate program. The events of September 11, 2001, have only reinforced the need to integrate security and intelligence studies further into higher education studies, including at the undergraduate level," said Dr. Phillip Jones, chair of the Global Security and Intelligence Studies program at Embry-Riddle. "These disciplines are in ever-increasing demand, particularly as the aviation industry, national security establishment, military services, multinational corporations, state and municipal governments, and law enforcement agencies undertake the vast new challenges of protecting the United States and its people from hostile groups." Embry-Riddle expects to open the program this fall with approximately 100 students enrolled. Academic offerings will focus on aviation security issues, intelligence history and analysis, international terrorism, national/homeland security, corporate security and competitive intelligence, and a range of global issues from the environment and security to public health. Graduates of Embry-Riddle's GSIS program will be prepared for employment in such areas as military and civilian intelligence, corporate security, aviation security, government, and law enforcement. Students will also obtain excellent preparation for law school or graduate schools specializing in international security studies and regional affairs. Interested students should visit Embry-Riddle's website at www.embryriddle.edu or call toll-free 1-800-888-3728. Embry-Riddle, the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of students and industry through its educational, training, research, and consulting activities. Embry-Riddle educates 25,000 students annually through the master's level at residential campuses in Prescott, Ariz., and Daytona Beach, Fla., at more than 130 teaching centers in the United States and Europe, and through distance learning. The Prescott campus has a student population of more than 1,700. |
