Embry-Riddle's Prescott Computer Engineering Program Receives ABET Accreditation

Prescott, Ariz., Sept. 15, 2003 -- The computer engineering program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's campus in Prescott, Ariz., has received accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Don Rabern, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering at the Prescott campus, announced the accreditation. "We are pleased with the performance of our computer engineering program. It is gratifying that ABET recognizes the excellence of this program," said Rabern.

The College of Engineering at the Prescott, Ariz., campus enrolls nearly 600 students in degree programs in computer engineering, computer science, aerospace engineering, and electrical engineering. The college consists of 25 full-time faculty.

Prescott's computer engineering program began in 1998 and has grown steadily in enrollments since its inception.

Students in the computer engineering program acquire a broad background in computing, programming languages, circuit theory, computer design, telecommunication systems, embedded control systems, real-time systems, and software engineering. In addition, the program includes significant project work that is designed to prepare students to work as part of a team on the development of complex systems. The program features a two-semester capstone design course in which students design and build special-purpose computer hardware and software using the latest technologies and tools.

"Computer engineering continues to be a growing field and our graduates are some of the most sought after in the industry," said Chuck Cone, chair of the Computer Engineering Department. "Graduates often find employment in the digital electronics industry as well as in government."
