Robert Myers Named Chancellor of Embry-Riddle's Extended Campus

Robert MyersDaytona Beach, Fla., Sept. 18, 2002 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is pleased to announce that Robert Myers, Ph.D., is the new chancellor of its Extended Campus.

As chancellor, Myers serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Extended Campus and is responsible for overall planning, resource allocation, and program evaluation, with special emphasis on pursuing the important market in noncredit education. He works closely with Embry-Riddle President George Ebbs; the chancellors of the university's other campuses, at Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz.; and the Extended Campus leadership team. Each year, the Extended Campus provides fully accredited Embry-Riddle courses and programs to more than 17,000 professionals working in civilian and military aviation and aerospace careers.

"We are extremely pleased to have someone with Dr. Myers' extensive credentials in distance learning managing our worldwide program," said Ebbs. "He is one of a small, select group of educators who have truly advanced the online learning system in higher education."

Previously, Myers was the executive vice president and chief operating officer of University of Maryland University College (UMUC), a worldwide university dedicated to the adult student. He also served as UMUC's interim president from 1998-99. Myers was a co-founder and a member of the board of UMUC OnLine Inc., a for-profit spinoff from University of Maryland University College that focuses on the worldwide marketing and enrollment management of non-Maryland students earning undergraduate and graduate degrees online.

Myers remains a member of the UMUC adjunct faculty in journalism, business management, public policy, and leadership and transformational change. He is certified by the university to teach online at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Myers launched and helped raise the initial funding for "Better Opportunities through Online Education," a scholarship program at UMUC that provides tuition-free education, a laptop computer, free Internet connectivity, and mentors to single, working mothers moving from welfare to the workforce.

He also implemented a major worldwide automation of UMUC's student services, human resources, and financial management areas.

As a presenter at regional and national conferences, Myers has probed such subjects as academic accountability and planning, entrepreneurial business activities in college and university settings, higher education's role in economic development, and marketing.

He holds a B.S., an M.A., and a Ph.D., the latter in higher education policy, planning, and administration, all from the University of Maryland College Park.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of students and industry through its educational, training, research, and consulting activities. Embry-Riddle educates 24,000 students annually through the master's level at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., at more than 150 teaching centers in the United States and Europe, and through distance learning.
