Embry-Riddle Homecoming Includes Aircraft Display, Parade, 15K Race


Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 9, 2002 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will celebrate its Homecoming Week and Alumni Reunion Nov. 6-10 with a series of special events, including an alumni fly-in and display of more than 75 aircraft under the theme "Embry-Riddle Salutes our Alumni in the Military."

Another major element will be the "United We Soar" homecoming parade, in which students from various nations will come together to display their floats in a fun and colorful procession.

Other Homecoming events that are open to the public include a golf tournament and 15K and 1-mile footraces that will benefit scholarships at Embry-Riddle, a talent show, a career expo, religious services, and an open house at Embry-Riddle's new $13.5 million Aviation Building that will include tours of state-of-the-art labs. Spectators may also enjoy baseball, basketball, and volleyball games.

All events are free unless noted below, and all events are on the Embry-Riddle campus at 600 S. Clyde Morris Blvd. except the alumni fly-in and aircraft display and the golf tournament. Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 6-7

Industry/Career Expo. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ICI Center. More than 50 major employers in aviation, aerospace, business, engineering and high-technology will distribute company information and job applications as well as scheduling on-the-spot job interviews. Companies represented include Boeing, Delta Air Lines, Lockheed Martin, Southwest Airlines, and United Space Alliance.

Thursday, Nov. 7

Homecoming Talent Show. 8 p.m. John Paul Riddle Student Center. Students will compete for prizes in the categories of individual, group, and band.

Friday, Nov. 8

Eagle Athletic Association Scholarship Scramble. 8:15 a.m. Prestwick Golf Club, Ormond Beach. The cost is $100 per player and includes lunch. Proceeds benefit the Champion of Character scholarship program.

Alumni Volleyball Match. 1 p.m. ICI Center. Embry-Riddle's current volleyball team will take on alumni players.

Homecoming Parade. 4 p.m. Floats created by more than 50 campus clubs and organizations will start at the Student Village, pass in front of Spruance Hall, and then loop by the John Paul Riddle Student Center, Hunt Library, and the Lehman Center. After the parade, the floats will be on display in the ICI Center parking lot.

Blue & Gold Alumni Basketball Game. 6 p.m. ICI Center. Teams of alumni players will challenge each other.

Homecoming Basketball Game. 7:30 p.m. ICI Center. The Embry-Riddle Eagles will play the Montreat College Cavaliers. At halftime the Homecoming king and queen will be crowned. Admission is $5. Students with Embry-Riddle I.D. card are admitted free. The evening includes a tribute to Embry-Riddle alumnus and trustee Mori Hosseini, the president and CEO of ICI Homes. The fieldhouse was dedicated as the ICI Center in June in appreciation of a generous contribution he made to the university.

Saturday, Nov. 9

15K Riddle Runaround Scholarship Race. 7:15 a.m. Noncompetitive 1-mile fun run at 7:30 a.m. Numerous awards will be presented in the 15K; all runners in the 1-mile fun run get medals. The first 300 preregistered runners will be given long-sleeve jerseys. All participants receive refreshments, a goody bag, and chances for door prizes. Entry fees for the 15K race range from $10 to $20; for the 1-mile fun run, from $6 to $10. The proceeds will benefit projects of the Daytona Beach West Rotary Club and the Embry-Riddle Scholarship Fund. Alumni Baseball Game. 1 p.m. Ballpark behind ICI Center. Teams of alumni baseball players will compete.

Aviation Building Open House and Tours. 2-3 p.m. Faculty will showcase meteorology labs, air traffic control simulation, and high-tech aviation equipment. This new facility houses the departments of aeronautical science, applied aviation sciences, and flight. Free refreshments will be available.

Catholic Mass. 5 p.m. Interfaith Chapel. Father Tim Daly will officiate.

Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9-10

Alumni Fly-In/Static Display. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Daytona Beach International Airport. Donation of $5 per car at Gate 59 on Richard Petty Boulevard. Aircraft scheduled to appear include: A-10 Thunderbolt, AH-64 Apache, AT-38C, B-1B Lancer, C-5 Galaxy, C-12 King Air, C-23 Citation, C-23 Sherpa, C-130 Hercules, C-130J Hercules II, CH-47 Chinook, E-3A AWACS Sentry, F-4 Phantom, F-15 Strike Eagle, F-16 Viper, F-18 Hornet, MH-6 Little Bird, MH-47 Special Ops, OH-58A Observation, P-3 Orion, PA-38 Tomahawk, T-6 Texan II, T-34 Mentor, T-37 Tweet, T-38 Talon, T-45 Goshawk, and UH-60 Blackhawk. Corporate and general aviation aircraft will also be on display. Other highlights include children's events and activities. Food and merchandise will be available for purchase.

Sunday, Nov. 10

Interfaith Worship Service. 8 a.m. Interfaith Chapel. Pastor Jack Ottoson and Father Tim Daly will officiate.
