Embry-Riddle Launches Project to Preserve Its 76-Year History

Daytona Beach, Fla., July 2, 2002 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has begun an ambitious project to preserve its history and document its heritage. The university will collect and archive documents, oral histories, memorabilia, and artifacts that tell the Embry-Riddle story from its earliest days as a flight school at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio, through its emergence as a global university.

This historical collection preserving the noteworthy and defining events in the life of Embry-Riddle will eventually be displayed on the university's Daytona Beach, Fla., campus, the Prescott, Ariz., campus, and at Extended Campus locations throughout the United States and Europe. The collection will be open to the public.

Throughout its history, Embry-Riddle has been a pioneer and influential partner in the evolution of the aviation industry in America and abroad. To preserve its legacy for students, researchers, and the public, Embry-Riddle is seeking the following:

  • Embry-Riddle photographs, slides, documents, letters, artifacts, or anything else that may be suitable for this collection.
  • People associated with Embry-Riddle over the years. The university is interested in recording oral histories of anyone who can talk about Embry-Riddle and its early days at Lunken Airport; its operations at several Florida training sites before, during, and after World War II; its establishment of campuses in Daytona Beach and Prescott; and its educational outreach through its Extended Campus teaching centers (the former International Campus) and distance learning (formerly Independent Studies). Alumni, former faculty and staff, and friends are invited to share a memory or connect with a "lost" friend at The Heritage Project.
  • People with expertise in archiving, curating, or preserving historical materials.
  • The university is also seeking financial assistance for the project.
