Embry-Riddle Wins Contract to Train Air Force Flight Safety Officers

Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 1, 2002 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has won a major contract from the U.S. Air Force to provide flight safety management and mishap investigation instruction to Air Force, Air National Guard, and international flight safety officers.

The $2.7 million, three-year contract will involve more than 700 flight safety officers a year at the Air Force Safety Center at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M. The courses will be taught on base. Embry-Riddle is partnering with Affiliated Computer Services (ACS), a defense informational technology contractor, in providing this instruction.

"This award reinforces Embry-Riddle's leadership in aviation safety education," said Eric Doten, director of the university's Center for Aerospace Safety/Security Education.

The courses will provide initial training to those who are entering the aviation safety field as safety program managers or accident investigators.

The program, which begins Oct. 21, covers topics such as accident investigation reporting and analysis, aircraft mishap investigation, communication skills, human error management, and safety program management.

The curriculum parallels courses that are taught in Embry-Riddle's safety/security management certificate program and safety science degree program. Embry-Riddle is developing plans to offer credit for the Air Force courses toward the university's master's degree in safety science.

In August, the U.S. Air Force Academy selected Embry-Riddle for a five-year contract to provide introductory flight training to cadets and lieutenants who will become Air Force pilots.

Embry-Riddle's ties with the U.S. military go back to World War II, when it trained more than 25,000 aviators and technicians, and the Korean War, when it taught airplane maintenance to U.S. Air Force pilots.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of students and industry through its educational, training, research, and consulting activities. Embry-Riddle educates 24,000 students annually through the master's level at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., at more than 150 teaching centers in the United States and Europe, and through distance learning.
