Daytona Beach Air Force ROTC Detachment Named Top Unit in Nation
Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 30, 2002 -- Air Force ROTC Detachment 157, composed of 600 cadets who attend Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach Community College, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, has been named the best of the 144 Air Force ROTC units in the nation for the 2001-2002 academic year.
AFROTC Det. 157 was presented with the Right of Line award, which goes to the winning unit, at the Worldwide AFROTC Commanders Conference held Oct. 14-18 in Atlanta, Ga.
"I couldn't be more pleased for the cadets, cadre, and the universities for winning the High Flight and Right of Line awards," said Col. Mike Coman, AFROTC Det. 157 commander. "Everybody associated with AFROTC Det. 157 should be proud."
The top unit in each of the four AFROTC regions competed for the Right of Line award.
Det. 157 proceeded to the national level after winning the High Flight award as the best of the 37 units in the Southeast region, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, parts of Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, and Virginia.
The criteria for the Right of Line and High Flight awards include best overall academic record, retention of cadets, cadet activities, university relations, community service, and innovation.
Det. 157 won the Right of Line award in 1999 and 1988 and has now won the High Flight award four years in a row. Det. 157 is the largest all-volunteer university AFROTC program in the nation and is also among the top producers of pilots and Air Force commissioned officers.
Each year AFROTC offers scholarships to some 2,000 of the nation's best high school students to encourage them to join one of the AFROTC detachments across the United States.
