Embry-Riddle to Mark Its 75th Year with Air Show over Atlantic Ocean

Wings & Waves LogoDaytona Beach, Fla., July 2, 2001 -- Wings & Waves: Celebrating Embry-Riddle's 75th AnniversaryTM, a spectacular air show over the ocean at Daytona Beach, Fla., and a concert by the Beach Boys, will be Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's 75th anniversary gift to the students, parents, graduates, faculty, staff, and supporters in the local community and aviation/aerospace industry who have contributed to its growth and success.

Wings & Waves: Celebrating Embry-Riddle's 75th AnniversaryTM will feature the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, wing walkers, sky divers, and popular aerobatic fliers, including Sean D. Tucker in his Oracle Challenger, one of the hottest air show acts in the world.

Two Embry-Riddle alumni also will perform. Eric Beard will execute high-G turns, multiple rolls, and gyroscopic tumbles in his Russian Thunder, one of only seven Yak 54s manufactured. Lee Lauderback will perform breathtaking maneuvers in a P-51 Mustang, the most famous fighter of World War II.

The "waves" part of the show will feature exciting speedboat racing and search-and-rescue demonstrations using helicopters and boats.

The family-oriented air and sea show, which is free and open to the public, will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 10 and 11, over the Atlantic Ocean, with the beachside Adam's Mark Resort as show center.

While aerobatic daredevils carve up the sky, spectators may sample music, food, concessions, and exhibits on the ground. Two beach runs, a 7.5k Riddle Run and a .75k Fun Run sponsored by the Ocean Deck Restaurant, are planned to tie in with the 75th anniversary theme.

The Beach Boys concert will be held at 8:30 p.m., Nov. 10, at the historic oceanfront Daytona Beach Bandshell. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert is sponsored by the university's Daytona Beach campus Student Government Association.

For four decades, the Beach Boys have been riding the crest of a wave unequaled in American music. The group's classic songs and harmonies embody the surfer lifestyle and appeal to a worldwide audience ranging in age from 6 to 60. The Beach Boys' first hit was "Surfin'," in 1961. This was followed by a string of chart-topping songs, including "California Girls," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Good Vibrations," "Help Me, Rhonda," "I Get Around," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Surfer Girl," "Surfin' USA," and "Wouldn't It Be Nice," to name just a few.

A Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m., Nov. 11, at the Bandshell will feature a 21-gun salute and a missing-man formation overflight. The ceremony is sponsored by Embry-Riddle's Veterans Affairs Office and Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Wings & Waves: Celebrating Embry-Riddle's 75th AnniversaryTM will coincide with the university's annual Homecoming, Alumni Reunion, Parents Weekend, and Industry/Career Expo, which will take place at its Daytona Beach campus, 600 S. Clyde Morris Blvd.

The Embry-Riddle Co., an air mail carrier, was established in Cincinnati, and became the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation a few months later, in 1926.

After a period of slow growth in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life as World War II erupted in Europe. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle, which had moved to South Florida, to become pilots and technicians. During the Korean War, Embry-Riddle trained Air Force pilots in airplane maintenance.

In 1965, Embry-Riddle relocated to Daytona Beach, evolving into a fully accredited university in 1970. A second residential campus was established in 1978, in Prescott, Ariz.

Through its Extended Campus, Embry-Riddle also offers selected degree programs to working adults at more than 100 learning centers in the United States and Europe and through distance learning technology. Today, the university has more than 23,000 students worldwide and 45,000 alumni who work in all areas of aviation, aerospace, and technology.
