Embry-Riddle Professor Mavis Green Assumes Presidency of University Aviation Association


Auburn, Ala., Nov. 28, 2001 -- Dr. Mavis F. Green, voted in as president elect by the University Aviation Association (UAA) membership last fall, assumed the top elected position as UAA president Oct. 27 at the close of the organization's annual Fall Education Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Green, an associate professor of Aeronautical Science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., announced the results of UAA's recent elections that include three officers and six Board of Trustees members. Officers elected to one-year terms include: Dr. Jack L. Sellers, president elect; Stephen M. Quilty, secretary; and Dr. Jacqueline R. Luedtke, treasurer. Members elected for three-year Board terms include: Dr. Mary Ann Turney, a professional member representing four-year institutions; Gordon Hoff, a professional member representing two-year institutions; and Susan Burrell, an associate member representing the aviation industry. Edward W. (Ted) Brown, a professional member representing two-year institutions, was elected to a one-year term.

Having a long history of service to UAA, Dr. Green served on the Board for the past two years and in various capacities, including treasurer; chair of the Awards Committee; member of the Flight Education, Publications and Scholarship Committees; and chair of both the Conference Research Roundtable and the Best Practices Roundtable. She holds a doctorate in education from the University of Illinois, a master's degree in aviation safety from Central Missouri State University, and a bachelor's degree in environmental science. Dr. Green is also a Gold Seal CFII-MEI and ATP rated pilot.

President Elect Jack Sellers is an assistant professor of Aviation Sciences Technology at Tulsa Community College in Oklahoma. Dr. Sellers is also a professional engineer and holds an FAA flight instructor certificate, with instrument instructor and multi-engine instructor ratings, and an FAA advanced ground school instructor certificate. He has been active in UAA for eight years and serves as chair of its Center of Excellence and Awards Committee.

Stephen M. Quilty is an associate professor in the Aviation Studies program at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Quilty is recognized as an Accredited Airport Executive (AAE) with the American Association of Airport Executives. He has more than 30 years experience in the aviation industry, primarily in the management of airports and aviation operational education. He received a master's degree in communication and a bachelor's degree in aviation management and technology from Western Michigan University. Quilty serves on UAA's Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Jacqueline R. Luedtke is a faculty member in the Aviation Department of Daniel Webster College in Nashua, New Hampshire. Dr. Luedtke holds a doctorate in higher education with an emphasis in aviation/aerospace from Oklahoma State University and a master's degree from Wichita State University. Her FAA certifications include commercial pilot, airplane multi-engine land and instrument, and advanced-instrument ground instructor. She served on the UAA Board for the past three years and currently serves as chair of its Publications Committee.

Ted Brown is chair of the School of Aviation and Flight Technology Department at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Brown graduated from the University of Toronto with a major in mechanical engineering. He maintains an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate and a Transport Canada Class 1 Instructor rating.

Susan M. Burrell is president of COMAIR Aviation Academy, a subsidiary of COMAIR Airlines (a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines). Burrell, who joined the Academy in 1993, became its president in 1999. She has a master's degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a bachelor's degree in marketing from Pennsylvania State University. Burrell, a certified commercial pilot, has served on UAA's National Advisory Council for the past three years.

Gordon Hoff is associate dean of the Minneapolis Community and Technical College-Aviation Center where he is responsible for the air traffic control and aviation technician training programs. Hoff received a master's degree from Minnesota State University and a bachelor's degree from North Dakota State University.

Dr. Mary Ann Turney is an associate professor at Arizona State University. Her professional credentials include a doctorate in higher education, a master's degree in secondary education, and a bachelor's degree in English literature. Dr. Turney, an active pilot and Gold Seal flight instructor, holds an ATP Certificate, an instrument and multi-engine instructor certificate, and an advanced ground instructor certificate from the FAA. She is chair of UAA's Flight Education and Meeting Planning Committees.
