Embry-Riddle to be Honored as Team Leader of FAA 's Center of Excellence for General Aviation
Daytona Beach, Fla., June 25, 2001 -- A dedication ceremony July 10 in Washington, D.C., will mark the naming of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as the leader of a team forming the FAA's new Air Transportation Center of Excellence for General Aviation. The ceremony will be held 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Florida House, 1 Second St. N.E.
Federal Aviation Administration officials will present plaques to representatives of Embry-Riddle and the other members of the consortium -- Florida A&M University, University of Alaska, University of North Dakota, and Wichita State University. Invited guests include FAA Administrator Jane Garvey, Senators Bob Graham, Jon Kyl, Bill Nelson and John McCain, and Representatives Allen Boyd, Corrine Brown, Ander Crenshaw, Jim Kolbe, John Mica, Bob Stump and Dave Weldon.
Rep. John L. Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Subcommittee on Aviation, has stated, "this designation reconfirms that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is one of the premier general aviation research institutions in the nation."
The FAA designates Centers of Excellence after rigorous competition and a formal evaluation based on criteria mandated in Public Law 101-508, the FAA Research and Engineering and Development Authorization Act of 1990. Through the Air Transportation Center of Excellence program, the FAA enhances internal research and taps into academic research, with the goal of expediting the application of new aviation technologies that benefit the aviation community and the flying public.
By establishing major research centers throughout the nation, the FAA creates a pool of professionals trained in aviation-related research; helps finance graduate education; fosters cooperative research and development by the FAA, universities, and industry; and ultimately improves the national airspace system. Assisted by awards of contracts and grants, these centers form a repository of knowledge as they perform basic research and conduct engineering development and prototyping.
