Daniel CarrellPrescott, Ariz., Dec. 4, 2001 -- Barry A. Benedict, Ph.D., senior vice president and chief academic officer of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, announced recently that Daniel L. Carrell Jr. has been appointed as the chancellor at the university's Prescott, Ariz., campus.

Carrell has served as the interim chancellor for the Prescott campus since October 2000. Carrell was the director of business and administration before he became interim chancellor and previously served as chairman of the flight and aeronautical science departments at the Prescott campus from 1987 to 1998. At Embry-Riddle since 1986, Carrell first came to the campus as director of development.

Prior to joining Embry-Riddle, Carrell served as the senior counselor/adviser at the Defense Language Institute in San Francisco and as chief instructor/deputy director of the Department of Combat Operations at the U.S. Army School of the Americas, Ft. Gulick, Republic of Panama.

Carrell is a retired infantry officer and military aviator who completed two combat tours in the Republic of Vietnam. In 1990, Carrell received a master of aeronautical science degree from Embry-Riddle while working full time for the university. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Northwestern State University.

"I have great confidence in the ability of Dan Carrell to lead the efforts of the Prescott campus," said Benedict. "Together with the faculty and staff, he will continue to build on the success of the campus, strengthen the bonds between the university's two residential campuses, and create a unified, shared vision for the campus and the university."

As chancellor, Carrell will serve as the chief administrative officer of the campus and will be responsible for the overall planning, resource allocation, and program evaluation of campus activities. He will work closely with Embry-Riddle President George Ebbs; Barry Benedict; the chancellors for the university's other campuses, including the Daytona Beach, Fla., campus and the Extended Campus; and the Prescott campus leadership team to ensure the overall success of the campus.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of students and industry through its educational, training, research, and consulting activities. Embry-Riddle educates 24,000 students annually through the master's level at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., at more than 150 teaching centers in the United States and Europe, and through distance learning.
