Embry-Riddle Presents the Beach Boys in Concert

Wings & Waves LogoDaytona Beach, Fla., Aug. 16, 2001 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is delighted to announce that the Beach Boys will perform as part of Wings and Waves: Celebrating Embry-Riddle's 75th AnniversaryTM.

This concert will be held at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Daytona Beach Bandshell. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert is sponsored by the Student Government Association at the university's Daytona Beach, Fla., campus.

Wings & Waves: Celebrating Embry-Riddle's 75th AnniversaryTM, a spectacular air show over the ocean at Daytona Beach and the Beach Boys concert, are Embry-Riddle's 75th anniversary gift to the students, parents, graduates, faculty, staff, and supporters in the community and aviation/aerospace industry who have contributed to its growth and success.

For four decades, the Beach Boys have been riding the crest of a wave unequaled in American music. The group's classic songs and harmonies embody the surfer lifestyle and appeal to a worldwide audience ranging in age from 6 to 60. The Beach Boys' first hit was "Surfin'," in 1961. This was followed by a string of chart-topping songs including "Surfin' USA," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Surfer Girl," "Help Me, Rhonda," "I Get Around," "California Girls," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and "Good Vibrations," to name just a few.

Wings & Waves: Celebrating Embry-Riddle's 75th AnniversaryTM will feature the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, wing walkers, sky divers, and popular aerobatic fliers, including Sean D. Tucker in his Oracle Challenger, one of the hottest air show acts in the world.

Two Embry-Riddle alumni also will perform. Eric Beard will execute high-G turns, multiple rolls, and gyroscopic tumbles in his Russian Thunder, one of only seven Yak 54s manufactured. Lee Lauderback will perform breathtaking maneuvers in a P-51 Mustang, the most famous fighter of World War II.

The "waves" part of the show will feature exciting speedboat racing and search-and-rescue demonstrations using helicopters and boats.

The family-oriented air and sea show, which is free and open to the public, will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 10 and 11, over the Atlantic Ocean, with the beachside Adam's Mark Resort as show center. While aerobatic daredevils carve up the sky, spectators may sample music, food, concessions, and exhibits on the ground. Two beach runs, a 7.5K Riddle Run and a .75K Fun Run sponsored by the Ocean Deck Restaurant, are planned to tie into the 75th anniversary theme.

A Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m., Nov. 11, at the Bandshell will feature a 21-gun salute and a missing-man formation overflight. The ceremony will be sponsored by Embry-Riddle's Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Wings & Waves: Celebrating Embry-Riddle's 75th AnniversaryTM will coincide with the university's annual Homecoming, Alumni Reunion, Parents Weekend, and Industry/Career Expo, which will take place on its Daytona Beach campus.
