Civil Engineering Program at Embry-Riddle Receives ABET Accreditation

Daytona Beach, Fla., Feb. 9, 2000 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University announces that the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) has granted accreditation to the bachelor of science degree program in civil engineering at the university's Daytona Beach, Fla., campus.

Embry-Riddle's civil engineering program was established in 1994 to meet the strong demand for engineers trained to apply problem-solving skills in aerospace design, airport planning and design, and transportation. Graduates of the program are prepared to become practicing engineers in the fundamental areas of civil engineering, including structures, materials, and soil mechanics and foundations. The program produced its first class of graduates in May 1998.

For more information, call program coordinator Frank McKelvey at 386-226-7725.

Other ABET-accredited programs at Embry-Riddle include the bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering at the university's Daytona Beach and Prescott, Ariz., campuses; bachelor's degree curricula in aircraft engineering technology, avionics engineering technology, and engineering physics at the Daytona Beach campus; and the bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the Prescott campus.

ABET is authorized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit some 2,300 engineering, engineering technology, and engineering-related educational programs at more than 500 colleges and universities in the United States. Peer review by practicing professionals allows accreditation to reflect standards set by the profession itself, thus ensuring a quality education.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of students and industry through its educational, training, research, and consulting activities. Degree programs through the master's level are offered at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., at more than 100 teaching sites in the U.S. and Europe, and through independent study and distance education.
