Embry-Riddle Professor Alan Bender Wins Air and Space Museum Fellowship
Daytona Beach, Fla., May 2, 2000 -- Dr. Alan Bender has been awarded the National Air and Space Museum's A. Verville Fellowship for 2000-2001.
Bender is an associate professor of aeronautical science and a Western Region faculty adviser for the Extended Campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The Western Region encompasses the university's teaching centers at military and civilian sites in California and Nevada. Bender is an expert on airline history and economics and transportation policy and planning.
The fellowship was established in 1983 in memory of Alfred V. Verville, a noted aircraft designer. A competitive nine-to-12-month residential fellowship, the Verville is intended to assist scholars interested in the analysis of major trends, developments, and accomplishments in aviation or space studies.
During his sabbatical from Embry-Riddle, Bender will have an office in the museum at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where he will research and write a book on the development and growth of the world's no-frills airlines.
Bender holds a Ph.D. in transportation geography and an M.S. in air transportation engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. and B.A. in geography from the University of California,
Los Angeles.
He is the author of numerous articles on airline planning and management that have appeared in such publications as Aviation Week & Space Technology, Journal of Air Transport Management, and Transportation Journal. Bender has conducted aviation-related research for NASA, the FAA, and the California Department of Transportation.
