ICAO Ambassador Edward Stimpson to Speak at Embry-Riddle Commencement
Ambassador Edward W. Stimpson will be the commencement speaker. Stimpson was named by President Clinton in July 1999 as the U.S. representative on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization. Previously, Stimpson was the president of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) for 25 years and served as the group's vice chairman from 1996 to 1999. GAMA is a national trade association representing the leading manufacturers of general aviation products in the United States. Stimpson was also chairman of "Be a Pilot," the largest industrywide effort in history to attract more people to flying.
Stimpson served on Embry-Riddle's board of trustees for 24 years. He was chairman of the board from 1987 to 1995 and was a member of numerous board committees. He received an honorary doctorate in aviation management from Embry-Riddle in 1974.
Stimpson also has experience in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), beginning in 1962. Named the assistant administrator for congressional liaison in 1965, he advised the FAA administrator on all phases of congressional activity.
Before his federal government service, Stimpson was acting director of the Pacific Science Center Foundation, where he developed and administered a program to convert the U.S. Science Pavilion at the Seattle World's Fair into a permanent science center.
His honors include the U.S. Department of Transportation's Meritorious Achievement Award, the FAA's Meritorious Service Award and its Decoration for Exceptional Service, and the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy. The National Aeronautic Association selected him as one of the six recipients of its 1997 Elder Statesman of Aviation Award.
Stimpson holds a master's degree in public administration from the University of Washington and a bachelor's degree in government from Harvard College.
During the commencement ceremony, Stimpson will receive Embry-Riddle's Eagle of Aviation Award, which recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of aviation.
