Embry-Riddle to Train Turkish Airlines Pilots

Daytona Beach, Fla., June 17, 1998 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has signed a contract with Turkish Airlines to train the airline's pilot candidates, beginning this summer.

Turkish AirlinesIn August, two dozen pilots from Turkish Airlines will begin a one-year training program on the Daytona Beach, Fla., campus that will provide all flight and ground training leading to an FAA commercial pilot certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings.

"We're pleased to be serving one of Europe's fastest-growing airlines," said Steven Sliwa, president of Embry-Riddle. "It brings us closer to our goal of becoming the first choice of the world's airlines for training pilots, technicians, dispatchers, managers, and engineers."

For the past two years, Embry-Riddle has been conducting flight training for cadets from Saudi Arabian Airlines, as well.

"Embry-Riddle was found to be the most well-rounded institution for providing the caliber of training for a rapidly growing airline like Turkish Airlines," said Captain Oktay Oztekin, vice president of flight operations at the airline. "This partnership will eliminate the need to obtain our entry-level cockpit crew members from the Turkish Air Force, which has been our only source for pilots."

Embry-Riddle will provide the necessary flight, device, and ground training to prepare the Turkish Airlines trainees to pass the practical test for the FAA commercial pilot certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings.

Students also will receive training in crew resource management -- procedures used by flight crews working together as a team. The training package includes pre- and post-flight briefings, ground training, and course and examination materials. Supplemental training in aviation English language will be offered as needed.

The University also will provide housing and meals to the Turkish Airlines trainees.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of these and related industries through its educational, training, research and consulting activities. Degree programs through the master's level are offered in Daytona Beach, Florida, Prescott, Arizona, and more than 100 teaching sites in the U.S. and Europe.
