Joan Lehman Sculpture Installed at Embry-Riddle

Daytona Beach, Fla., June 17, 1998 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will install a sculpture created by Miami artist Joan Lehman on its Daytona Beach, Fla., campus June 23. The stainless steel sculpture, titled Reaching High, will be displayed prominently at the entrance of the University's new Lehman Engineering and Technology Center, named for the artist's husband, William Lehman, former U.S. Congressman and an Embry-Riddle graduate.

Reaching HighThe abstract sculpture is 25 feet high and weighs 4,100 pounds. It has an aerodynamic design and two elliptical rings at its apex that evoke the orbits of planets and spacecraft. The design is meant to reflect the fact that Embry-Riddle is home for the nation's largest degree programs in aeronautical engineering and engineering physics, both of which are housed in the Lehman Center.

Before beginning her design, the artist said she talked with the University's president, Steven Sliwa, and several of its students. "I believe the sculpture captures the spirit of Embry-Riddle," Lehman said. "The University and its students are always aiming and reaching higher."

Lehman has had more than two dozen exhibits and one-woman shows, including at the National Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, the Salon de Mayo in Barcelona, Spain, and the Israel National Museum in Jerusalem, Israel. Her works are in public and private collections around the world. She studied with famed artists Hans Hoffman and Robert Motherwell in New York City and worked in the sculpture workshops of Spanish artists Xavier Cortero and Marcel Marti.

Embry-Riddle, the world's largest fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, meets the needs of these and related industries through its educational, training, research and consulting activities. Degree programs through the master's level are offered in Daytona Beach, Florida, Prescott, Arizona, and more than 100 teaching sites in the U.S. and Europe.
