Retired Airline Captain Barry Schiff to Speak at Embry-Riddle Commencement


Prescott, Ariz., Dec. 1, 1998 -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will hold its Fall graduation ceremony for 118 students on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. in the University Activity Center.

Dr. Barry SchiffDr. Barry Schiff will be the commencement speaker. Schiff is a retired airline captain, aviation world-record holder, publisher of educational materials, author of numerous articles on aviation, and organizer of the first Middle East Peace flight.

Employed by TWA from 1964 until his retirement as a captain in 1998, Dr. Schiff was qualified on the Lockheed Constellation, the Lockheed 1011, and Boeing models 707, 727, 747, 757, and 767. He has logged more than 25,500 hours in 251 types of aircraft.

Schiff's flight experience includes experimental flight testing of light aircraft; transoceanic, polar, and international aircraft operation; and air taxi, corporate, and flight-training activities. He has also established curricula for and taught FAA-approved flight and ground schools for all levels of pilot certification. He served as chair on numerous FAA advisory committees.

Schiff holds five world records for speed and time to climb. Other honors and awards include the U.S. Congressional Commendation (1975), 10 Journalism awards from the Aviation/Space Writers Association, and four Special Awards from the FAA. In 1980 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University presented him with an honorary doctorate in Aeronautical Science.

Dr. Schiff has written more than 930 magazine articles on flight safety, operational procedures and techniques, and aeronautical theory. Many of these articles were translated into other languages and published by foreign governments and military services.

Notably, Schiff is responsible for the developing the concept that provides guidance for VFR pilots through complex, high-density airspace. He also organized and led the first Peace flight from Israel to Jordan, which consisted of 31 light airplanes.

Founder and president of Aero-Progress, Inc., Dr. Schiff developed and published a series of innovative educational products and training aids for pilots. These have been marketed commercially and have received international recognition

Dr. Schiff's affiliations include: American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Aviation/Space Writers Association, International Society of Air Safety Investigators, and the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.
