Daytona Beach, Fla., Aug. 21, 1998 -- Dr. George H. He will assume his responsibilities as the fourth president of the university effective September 16.

Dr. George H. EbbsEmbry-Riddle is a fully accredited, private, independent, not-for-profit institution with an enrollment of more than 20,000 students worldwide and has the nation's largest aeronautical science (professional pilot), aerospace engineering, and engineering physics degree programs.

"Dr. Ebbs brings a wealth of commercial aviation experience, established relationships with industry leaders, and a solid track record of management and fiscal success to Embry-Riddle. He is exceptionally qualified to provide the vision and leadership to ensure the continued growth and success of Embry-Riddle," said James O'Connor, chairman of Embry-Riddle's board of trustees.

The Canaan Group, a management consulting firm providing business strategy, market analysis, organizational development, and business process improvement services to executives in the commercial aviation industry, was founded by Ebbs. Clients include major US, European, and Asian/Pacific airlines, primary aircraft manufacturers, aircraft systems and component suppliers, and leading independent service providers. The firm, located in Park City, Utah, was recently acquired by AlliedSignal. Ebbs will continue to be of counsel to The Canaan Group and its new president.

"Higher education has long been a calling, and this opportunity to join such a prestigious university as Embry-Riddle -- whose specialties, interests, and vision match my own -- is truly fortunate," said Ebbs.

Before establishing The Canaan Group, Ebbs served as senior vice president of Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Inc., where he led their general management and industrial practices and established the firm's aerospace consulting group. He led the development and implementation of Booz-Allen's first five-year strategic plan and served on their board of directors and management committee.

Previous work experience includes positions as vice president and managing officer at Fry Consulting Group and senior facilities engineer for The Boeing Company, where he worked on the supersonic transport proposal to the US government. Ebbs was active at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, where he served on the Dean's Council and was chairman of the alumni annual fund. He taught the capstone MBA business strategy course at Columbia and was a member of the faculty at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Ebbs earned a doctoral degree in business policy and organization management at Columbia University, a master's degree in business administration from the University of Washington, and a bachelor of science degree in metallurgical engineering from Purdue University.

Ebbs is a member of the International Council of FLS Aerospace in London, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a member of the Wings Club of New York, and a trustee of Utah Opera.

Ebbs follows Dr. Steven M. Sliwa who served as president of Embry-Riddle from 1991 through 1998. Sliwa was recently appointed CEO and president of Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc. of West Hartford, Conn. Sliwa plans to remain involved with Embry-Riddle as a benefactor and an athletic booster.
