Safety Focus Added for Students in Embry-Riddle's Distance Learning Program

Daytona Beach, Fla., June 19, 1997 -- A specialization in aviation safety has been added to the master's in aeronautical science (MAS) degree curriculum offered by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's distance learning program. Students in the MAS program also can choose between aviation/aerospace management and operations specializations.

An emphasis on aviation safety is playing an increasingly important role in commercial and military aviation.

The distance learning program extends Embry-Riddle's educational reach beyond its residential campuses and the 115 education centers it operates in the US and Europe. It enables students anywhere in the world whose work, schedule, or location prevent them from attending class to earn a master's degree at home.

Students in the distance learning program learn from specially prepared videotapes and printed materials and communicate with their professors and fellow students via a private forum on CompuServe. The faculty contribute valuable insights gained from distinguished careers in aviation and management.

The MAS degree program teaches the use of modern management concepts, methods, and tools, with a focus on problems and issues of the aviation business. It is a popular choice of military and civilian professionals working in aviation and aerospace.

At the core of the curriculum are courses in air transportation, aircraft and spacecraft development, human factors in aviation and aerospace, and research methods and statistics. Students take four courses in their specialization - aviation/aerospace accident investigation and safety programs, aviation/aerospace systems safety, aviation/aerospace industrial management, and airport operations safety. They also complete three electives and a graduate research project.

The MAS program is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The world's largest university specializing in aviation and aerospace, Embry-Riddle has campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and 115 education centers in the U.S. and Europe. Its curriculum covers the operation, engineering, research, manufacturing, management, and marketing of modern aircraft and the systems that support them.
