U.S. Air Force General to Present Commencement Address at Embry-Riddle


Daytona Beach, Fla., Dec. 1, 1997 -- Five hundred twelve students will participate in the Fall graduation ceremony on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Daytona Beach campus Saturday, December 13, 1997. The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the University Fieldhouse and will be preceded by a hooding ceremony for master's candidates at 8:00 a.m. in the Auditorium. Immediately following the ceremony, a reception will be held in the John Paul Riddle Student Center for all who wish to attend.

Gen. Lloyd W. NewtonGeneral Lloyd W. "Fig" Newton, commander of Air Education and Training Command (AETC) for the United States Air Force, will be the commencement speaker. Responsible for the recruitment, training and education of Air Force personnel, his command includes Air Force Recruiting Service, two numbered air forces and Air University. AETC consists of 13 bases, more than 43,000 active duty members and 14,000 civilians. Spanning thirty years, General Newton's Air Force career has included such diverse roles as being a congressional liaison officer to the U.S. House of Representatives and flying with the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force Aerial Demonstration Squadron. Of the 12 active duty four-star generals in the Air Force, Newton is the only African-American. Embry-Riddle President Steven M. Sliwa will award the general an honorary doctorate in aeronautical science.

Albert Ueltschi Albert L. Ueltschi will receive an honorary doctorate in aeronautical science and another in aviation business administration. Mr. Ueltschi is president and chief executive officer of FlightSafety International, Inc.

Larry G. McKeanLarry G. McKean, who recently retired from The Boeing Company as senior vice president of human resources, will receive the University's Eagle of Aviation Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of aviation.
