Patriots Point Onboard Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown Hosts Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Commencement CeremonyCharleston, S.C., Oct. 9, 2008 – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Worldwide Campus locations at Charleston Air Force Base and Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station will conduct a joint commencement ceremony in the Patriots Point onboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18. A reception in the hangar bay will follow. At the ceremony, 17 students will receive undergraduate degrees in Professional Aeronautics and Technical Management and graduate degrees in Aeronautical Science. The graduates are civilian and military personnel from both campus locations. The commencement address and degrees will be conferred by Dr. John P. Johnson, president of Embry-Riddle. Also participating in the graduation ceremony are Martin A. Smith, chancellor of Embry-Riddle’s Worldwide Campus and Dr. Bernard D. Cordial Jr., dean of academic affairs for the Eastern Region of Embry-Riddle’s Worldwide Campus. Dr. Johnson has served as president of Embry-Riddle since November 2005; previously he was provost and chief academic officer. At Embry-Riddle he has a strong track record of developing new degree programs, increasing enrollment, and enhancing scholarly productivity. Previously he was provost and vice president for academic affairs and a professor of biology at Texas A&M University, Texarkana. The Worldwide Campus began in 1970 as a branch of Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus at Ft. Rucker, Ala., with 20 students, primarily military working adults. Since then, the program has become one of the nation’s largest off-campus, regionally accredited colleges, with over 45,000 alumni. It educates more than 27,000 students through classroom, online, or hybrid undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs.
