GEM’s Camp's Science Around the World 2009
Our 3rd annual GEMS (Girls Exploring Math & Science) summer camp has a new travel theme this year and is for any girl, ages 8-13, to explore math, science, and technology through fun, interactive activities.
Girls who are Scouts can earn up to five Junior or Cadette badges in one week by completing specific activities.
We've got your passport to fun this summer!
Overview:
This year, we are providing each camper with a pretend passport that will have their picture and will be stamped each day. We'll combine science with multicultural exploration by learning about scientific wonders in a different country or countries each day.
Each girl receives a mini-passport and gets stamped with each country that she's visited. You'll "travel" to the following countries:
"Visit" Japan and learn about computer animation by using a 3-D modeling program to design your own cartoon figures
"Visit" Egypt and learn about the great pyramids and try preservation techniques on apples.
"Visit" France's Eiffel Tower and learn about structures and physics with Marie Curie.
"Visit" Canada and learn about robotics while making your own little programmable sleeping cat robot with art supplies and programmable computer chips.
"Visit" China where you will learn about making paper, the Great Wall of China, and other cool inventions.
Finish in the United States and learn about the International Space Station.
You'll also learn this science and technology:
- Physics
- Robotics
- Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD)
- Chemistry
- Basic Engineering Principles
- Space Science

Counselors: 90% of our counselors are female Aerospace Engineering students who are experienced and knowledgeable about engineering, scientific principles, and how to make camp fun. Many were Girl Scouts or camp counselors previously. The other 10% of our counselors are male or female engineering, meteorology, aeronautical science, or other majors at Embry-Riddle. All counselors are chosen for their ability to work with young girls and are background checked by the Volusia County Schools. Each class room has at least two qualified counselors. Campers use the buddy system and are accompanied by a female counselor at all times. There are 10 counselors on staff throughout the camp as well as an Assistant Director and two Co-Directors.
