Obtaining Accommodations and Support Services

The individual student with a disability is responsible for initiating consideration for protection from discrimination, accommodations and/or support services by contacting the office of Disability Support Services. Because some accommodations and services require extensive research and preparation of resources, requests for accommodation should be made in a timely manner---the University cannot guarantee the availability of appropriate accommodations without ample time to make necessary preparations. It is often helpful for the student to contact the DSS office following formal admission to the University and prior to enrollment. Notification should be presented in writing and by making an appointment to consult, in person or by phone, with a member of the DSS professional staff. Written notification may initially be made via email but should be followed with a hard copy.

Determination of disability support is based on the documentation provided and consultation between the student, DSS staff and, when indicated, pertinent institutional personnel. Individual needs, strengths and limitations, past experiences and the academic program are considered in determining the type and level of services or accommodation. Students are encouraged to be self-directed and are responsible for maintaining communication with the DSS staff and individual faculty.

Once disability status has been established, students are required to consult with their DSS provider each semester that services are anticipated/needed to review progress, discuss accommodations, authorize faculty notification/liaison and formulate an objective support plan.
