Safety Tips
- Use the "buddy" system when walking on campus, especially
at night. When walking, stay in active, well-lit areas.
An ESCORT service is available 24 hours a day by calling
extension 6480.
- Lock and double check your doors and windows before you
leave, even for a short time. Don't leave your keys or I.D.
cards and be sure to report lost keys or cards promptly.
- Always be aware of your surroundings, and report suspicious
activity to the Safety Department. For emergencies, look
for a Blue Light emergency phone or dial
7233(SAFE).
- Park in well-lit portions of parking lots, keep valuables
out of sight, preferably in the trunk, lock your car, and
avoid walking to your vehicle alone.
- If you become the victim of a crime, report it immediately
to the Safety Department. If we don't know that a crime has
occurred, there is nothing we can do to help.
- Don't leave large amounts of money in your room. The Department
suggests you open a local bank account. Also, keep valuables
such as jewelry, watches and loose change out of sight. If
you live in the Residence Halls use the "lock boxes" provided.
- Record the serial numbers of your valuables and keep these
numbers in a safe place. Mark your valuables with an identification
number. A driver's license number engraved on valuables will
help aid the police in recovering items and returning them
to the rightful owner. Engravers are available in the Parking
and Traffic Services Office at the Student Center.
- Never leave your possessions unattended in public places.
Remember, the majority of thefts on campus are thefts of opportunity.
- Check our personal lightning
safety page
- If you lose an item on campus, report it to the Information
Center in the Student Center lobby.
- Contact the Safety Department regarding any questions you
may have concerzning safety and security. We are here to help
you in any way we can.
