Crime Prevention and Personal Safety Programs
The Campus Safety Department's Crime Prevention section has organized several
programs aimed at ensuring personal and public security. All of these programs
and brochures are available through the Safety Department. Interested students,
faculty, and staff are encouraged to inquire about them by calling 386-226-6490
or visiting Student Center room 256.
Project Gradesaver
Project GRADESAVER is a textbook marking system, aimed at assisting students
in identifying, recovering, and returning of lost or stolen textbooks. Project
Gradesaver decals should be placed on the front of the book alerting others
that the book is marked. Decals and inventory cards can be obtained through
the Safety Department.
Operation Identification
This program is a property marking and identification
system designed to
assist students and employees in the return of property in event of loss or
theft. The return of property which is recorded and marked is significantly
higher than for unmarked property. The Safety Department maintains electrostatic
markers for your use. All high value property should also be recorded by make,
model and serial number. This list along with a receipt of purchase should
be kept in a separate secure location. A property Inventory Log is available
at the back of the Operation ID brochure.
“Gimme 5”
“Gimme 5” allows the Safety Department to partner with clubs, organizations,
and departments promoting Crime Prevention programs. Although we ask for only
5 minutes to provide a brief overview of programs, participation in the form
of questions or concerns usually lengthens the session.
This program is an excellent method to explain how the Safety Department can
help the campus community and share information. Interested organizations are
encouraged to request this service.
Crime Prevention Liaison Representatives
Crime Prevention Liaison Representatives (CPLR) are faculty and staff who
participate in coordination with the Safety Department to provide a single
point of contact to improve lines of communication on a routine basis and in
emergency situations. The program is voluntary and representatives are designated
for each facility. The CPLRs receive formal training from the Safety Department,
Daytona Beach Police Department Officers, their Emergency Management Technician,
and the Daytona Beach Fire Department.
Lease-A-Lock
The Lease-a-Lock program is managed by our Parking & Traffic Services
Office (PTSO). Property security is very important to everyone at Embry-Riddle.
Discourage a thief from attempting to steal and deprive you of your valuable
property. Locks can be leased for less than $20 and when no longer needed,
the lock & keys can be returned for a full refund. “Kryptonite” U-shaped
locks for bicycles as well as “New York Nooses” for motorcycles are available.
Participation in this program is strongly encouraged.
Eagle Alerts
Eagle Alerts are prepared and posted throughout campus as a precautionary
measure to increase awareness and remind the campus community to take additional
measures to protect self and/or property due to an upcoming event. Alerts are
also posted as advisories pertaining to ongoing reports of criminal activity
on or adjacent to campus.
Operation Gotcha
Operation GOTCHA is an awareness program designed to warn people about potential
consequences if property is not protected. A visual reminder in the
form of a brightly colored 3 X 5 card stating ‘If I had
been a thief, this property would have been stolen" will be placed
on the property.
The area or room will then be secured by Safety Department
personnel. If the area cannot be secured, the property will be retained for
safekeeping until it can be released to the responsible person.
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is an effective way
to promote safety through the design or layout of an area. It utilizes basic
principles that make our environment less prone to crime. Our Crime Prevention
section will provide a CPTED survey of your area and make recommendations about
how to improve the general safety of an area.
The Student Crime Prevention Practitioner Program
Student Crime Prevention Practitioners (SCPP) assist the Safety Department
during the academic year. The Practitioner program harnesses the creative energy
of the student through peer education programs and special preventative patrols.
SCPP's receive free room as compensation for their duties. Interested students
are encouraged to contact out Crime Prevention section for more information.
Motorcycle Training
The Safety Department partners with Florida Motorcycle Training and the ERAU
Riddle Riders Motorcycle Club to promote and sponsor this important training
program. Training sessions are conducted monthly in both G building and the
Tomcat parking lot. The course cost is $220 but Embry-Riddle staff and students pay a discounted
rate of $160 with Eagle Card. Limited $100 scholarships are also available
from Embry-Riddle students courtesy of the Riddle Rider Motorcycle club. Scholarships
will only be rewarded for training courses hosted by and completed on Embry-Riddle
