New Student Information

Orientation

We want you to be ready to begin your university studies in the United States, and become aware of both your rights and responsibilities as an international student at ERAU. For your benefit, there are two orientations you are required to attend.

1. International Student Orientation: Attendance is Mandatory

Formal orientation sessions take place each fall and spring semester for new International Students. You will be informed of the location. Please bring the following documents with you; they must be presented when you check-in for Orientation:

  • Passport
  • I-94 arrival/departure card
  • All I-20’s or DS-2019 forms

Students of all non-immigrant status are required to check in with appropriate documents. By law, International Student Services (ISS) must keep updated copies of your documents. We need to have a current file for you. Once you have arrived, remember that you are responsible for notifying the Designated School Official – located in the International and Graduate Admissions Office - within 10 days of any change to your documents.

2. Campus New Student Orientation: Attendance is Required

Campus New Student Orientation takes place at the beginning of each semester. During this time you will obtain your University identification card, register for classes and receive pertinent information to begin your academic studies. This is your time to become familiar with Embry-Riddle. As an international student - please remember:

  • Be sure to protect your legal documents. Make extra photocopies.
  • Never destroy your Immigration documents. Keep them in a safe place.
  • Student Employment
    • You are allowed to work on campus while you are a student. To do this, you must have a job offer and obtain a Social Security Card.
    • You may work up to 20 hours per week if you qualify during normal fall and spring semesters. Student Employment provides for more work authorization time during summer sessions and holidays (35 hours).
    • After you have processed your Hire paperwork with Student Employment, come by the ISS Office for assistance in obtaining the Social Security Card.
    • You may not work off campus, without specific permission from the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Learn more about Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training during Orientation and from the SEVIS office for more information on this regulation.

How Do I Obtain a Driver's License?

  • Cars are expensive to buy, insure, license and maintain. If you do decide you need a car, you must have a valid driver’s license.
  • If you already have an international driver’s license or a driver’s license from your country (written in English), you may drive for up to one month in Florida while you are arranging to get a Florida driver’s license.
  • If you have a driver’s license from another State in the United States, you must turn it in and take the written examination to receive a Florida license.
  • When applying for a Florida license, you will be required to show your passport and your original stamped I-20 as proof of identification. Your license will only be valid for the period your I-20 is valid.

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is a busy facility. You may wish to call (386) 238- 3142 for an appointment to take the exam, otherwise you should be prepared to wait in lines for several hours. The office is open from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; 7:30 – 6:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday. The Department is located at 310 Jean Street, Daytona Beach; about one mile away from the Daytona Beach Campus. You can view a complete copy of the driver’s manual online.

Sponsored Students

If your sponsor requires you to submit an official transcript of grades each semester, you will need to complete a Sponsor Card in the ISS Office during Orientation. If there are changes in your advisor’s name, the sponsor address, or ID number – please come by the ISS Office as soon as possible with the revised information. Thank you.
