INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES
Before You Arrive!Welcome to the United States of America and to your new home, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Transportation to the CampusThe campus is located near the Daytona Beach
Airport; however, you will need ground transportation
to reach the campus. A taxi is approximately $5.00
per person. Two services are suggested to consider when commuting from Orlando to Daytona. The Orlando Airport Shuttle, a bus service that operates between the Orlando airport and the campus, will be the least expensive mode of transportation. The second service is D.O.T.S. These service sites will provide pertinent information to make your travel to campus relaxing and enjoyable. Note: (We recommend that you do not book a flight to Miami as there is no connecting bus service between Miami International Airport and Daytona Beach). AccommodationsIf you arrive in the evening or on the weekend when university offices are closed, you will need to rent a room in a hotel. If you mention you are a new student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the hotel may give you a small discount. Some hotels close to campus are (includes 2008 rates for ERAU discount):
On-campus Housing, Meal ProgramDuring fall and spring semesters, all unmarried first-year students under age 21 are required to live in University-managed housing. First-year students must participate in the Dining Service’s meal programs. There is no housing requirement for summer terms, but students would be required to move on campus for the fall and spring semesters of the academic year. All students may apply to live in University housing. For students with confirmed housing contracts, residence halls will be open for check-in at the Housing Office from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on the day before international student orientation day. Housing Office
Off-Campus HousingThe ISS office can help eligible students locate an apartment, another student seeking a roommate or a possible home-stay with an American family. Most off-campus housing is unfurnished and is not within comfortable walking distance from campus. A bicycle may be essential if you do not plan to have a car. Deposits for apartments and utilities are expensive with most apartment complexes requiring the first and last month’s rent plus an additional damage deposit. It is best to bring traveler’s checks to cover initial costs since local banks can hold checks drawn on international banks up to three weeks before funds may be available. Traveler’s checks can be used to purchase textbooks, pay deposits and open bank accounts. Health Insurance
By law and University requirements, you must have health insurance as a condition of enrollment. If you have insurance and wish to be exempt from the University group policy, the deadline for providing proof of alternative insurance is by the end of the second week of class. To be exempt from the University group policy, please bring your policy provisions, stipulating the amount of coverage for illness and injuries to the ISS Office. If you do not provide proof of your alternative coverage by the second week of class, you will be responsible to pay for the University insurance policy. There will be new choice for insurance for the students arriving this fall, 2008. Please read over the material that is sent to you. Other QuestionsIf you have any questions, or encounter any problems, please do not hesitate to come by. International Student Services Office Continue to communicate with International Admissions until you have arrived on campus for your university classes. The ISS Department staff is available to help you with whatever you may need and look forward to working with you.
