H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccination Clinic

Health Services has received a limited quantity of H1N1 nasal mist vaccine and is pleased to offer a series of FREE campus based vaccination clinics for eligible students.  Participation in Embry Riddle’s vaccination clinics for H1N1 flu is voluntary. However, the Centers for Disease Control recommends that individuals carefully consider the benefits versus risks of being vaccinated for H1N1 flu in addition to annual immunization for seasonal influenza. Please read the following details carefully as the nasal mist form of vaccine is contraindicated for certain individuals. This is because the nasal vaccine is prepared from weakened live virus whereas the injectable form is a killed virus vaccine.

Schedule for Nasal Mist Vaccine Clinics

Location: Health Services, Building # 20, The Wellness Center

Dates: Tuesday, Dec. 1st, Wednesday, Dec. 2nd, Thursday, Dec. 3rd

Times: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Eligibility:

  • Students younger than 49 years
  • Students who have no pre-existing medical conditions (i.e. Asthma)
  • Students who are not pregnant

Please note: If you have had a confirmed (by state laboratory testing) case of H1N1 Flu, you are considered immune; you do not require vaccination.

No appointment is required.  If you choose to be vaccinated you will be given an information sheet on the H1N1 Flu and the nasal mist vaccine.  You will then sign a form to give your consent for a Health Services clinician to administer the nasal vaccine. Please be prepared to wait ten minutes following your vaccination.

Also, if you are under 18years of age, please contact Health Services in advance so that we can fax a consent form to your parent or guardian.

Health Services has also ordered a supply of injectable H1N1 vaccine; this form of the vaccine can be administered to all students regardless of age, pregnancy or pre-existing condition.  At this time we await its approval and delivery from the Florida Department of Health.  We will forward notice regarding future clinics for this form of the vaccine as soon as it becomes available.

Let’s Keep “The Flu” Out of ERAU!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is predicting a possible surge in cases of the H1N1 Swine Flu this fall. The CDC and ERAU Health Services strongly suggest the following things you can do to protect yourself and all of us from the spread of the Swine Flu:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often, especially after you cough or sneeze. Hand sanitizer is also effective.
  • Cover your cough with a tissue and throw it away afterwards. Cough into your sleeve as an alternative.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you experience flu-like symptoms, stay home, consult a health care provider and avoid contact with others. If you live on campus, report your symptoms to ERAU Health Services, the residence hall staff, or Campus Safety as soon as possible.

The symptoms of the Swine Flu are similar to that of seasonal influenza, including:

  • Body aches
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea and vomiting in some patients

Flu symptoms are severe, with rapid onset while symptoms of a cold have gradual onset and are less pronounced. For more information visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov .
