Student pilot and instructor walk to aircraft at Embry-Riddle's flightline, located on the Daytona Beach campus

Can you walk from flight activities to the dorms or class?
Yes, Embry-Riddle is the only university where the flight line is on the main campus. The campus is adjacent to Daytona Beach International Airport. See map of how flight line is situated between the airport and campus.

When and where do I need to check in for my activities?
Check in is at the Flight Desk on the first floor of the D-Building for flights and orals. For simulator activities you must check in at the Advanced Simulation Center building.
You must check in:
-- 30 minutes prior to a flight activity
-- 15 minutes prior to a simulator activity
--  5 minutes prior to an oral

What happens if I get sick and cannot fly?
You must go to Health Services and ground yourself.  This will excuse you from flight activities.

When you are applying for a certificate issued on the basis of a foreign license under the provisions of or adding to a certificate:
 14 CFR Part 61, Section 61.75
Special purpose pilot authorizations under Section 61.77
Using a pilot certificate issued under Section 61.75 to apply for a commercial pilot certificate under Section 61.123 (h)
Applying for an airline transport pilot certificate issued under Section 61.153(d) (3)
Applying for a certificate issued on the basis of a foreign license under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 63, Sections 63.23 and 63.42

After completing the training session, you will proceed to the Flight Operations Payment station. A flight ticket will be presented to you indicating the type of instruction and the number of hours you just received. Your signature and the instructor’s signature will be required to validate this instruction. Charges for that session will be calculated and payment will be collected using cash or your credit card, debit card, or Eagle Card. Your payment will be processed and you will be given a receipt.

If your method of payment cannot be processed for whatever reason, the training session will be charged to your student account. A hold will be placed on your account until this transaction is paid. Any further instruction will be suspended until payment is received.

Course Information

What is FAR part 142?
All of the flight courses at Embry-Riddle are FAR Part 142 courses.  Part 142 allows us to count simulator time towards the FAA minimum course hours.  With FAR Part 142 we are able to have more training in flight simulators. This reduces the number of hours that a student would traditionally spend in an aircraft, thus reducing cost.

Who do I see to get credit for the flight ratings that I have accomplished before Embry-Riddle?
Kenneth Byrnes in Flight Complex Building D room 218.

What if I already have my private before starting at Embry-Riddle?
You will start your flight training at Embry-Riddle in our single-engine instrument course (FA295D).
You will need to sign up for AS 232 and register for an FA 295D flight block.

What if I have 10 or more hours of flight time before arriving at Embry-Riddle?
Usually, if a student arrives at Embry-Riddle with minimal flight experience we put them in our Private Pilot Course.

What if I have soloed or I have more than 25 hours of flight time before arriving at Embry-Riddle?
If a student has made significant progress towards a flight rating (25 or more hours) we create a special topics course for you to finish that rating.

What is a Special Topics flight course?
A special topics course is a course that we create for a student to finish a flight rating under FAR Part 61.  This course has no structure to it; you and your flight instructor will fly until you meet the FAR Part 61 minimums and become proficient enough to pass the FAA Checkride.  In order to take the checkride in this course the student must fly with an FAA Designated Examiner (DE).  The student is responsible for paying the DE.

Will classes interfere with my flying?
No, since you will be signing up for a three-day-a-week flight block, your registration for a flight block will be done when you resister for regular classes.

What if I do not finish my flight course during the semester?
Any student who does not finish within the semester will continue in the same flight course the next semester. Please refer to the Registration of Classes booklet, which has the list of classes and times for the semester, for further instructions.

What should I do after I complete a flight course?
After completing a course you must register for a flight block with the next flight course in your training.  This can be done anytime during a semester providing pre- / co-requisites are met.

Will I be able to take my FAA Written Tests at Embry-Riddle?
Yes.   There is an FAA Testing Center conveniently located on campus in the COA Building, Room 133.  The hours of testing are from 8:00 m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

How much do the FAA Written Tests cost?
The FAA Written is discounted at $70.00 per test.  For additional questions you may call the Testing Center direct at 386-226-4945.  The cost for testing at Embry-Riddle is about $20.00 cheaper than testing off-site.

Aircraft and Airspace

What type of aircraft does Embry-Riddle fly?
Cessna 172S, Piper Arrow, Piper Seminole, and Decathlon.

What is ADS-B?
The Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast program is an FAA-initiated project operating under Safe Flight 21 direction. Embry-Riddle remains the only major collegiate program to employ the ADS-B system in every aircraft in our fleet. The primary purpose of ADS-B is as a safety tool to provide flight monitoring in non-radar environments.  The system consists of a network of Ground Based Transmitters (GBT) and electronic equipment in the aircraft.  The aircraft transmits its position continuously to the nearest GBT and the GBT transmits information to the aircraft providing positional information of other aircraft in the area.  Weather information is also transmitted to the aircraft.

Does Embry-Riddle have glass cockpits?
We have 41 Garmin 1000 glass cocpit-equipped Cessna 172s out of a fleet of 43.

What aircraft are used in each course?
The private pilot course uses the Cessna 172. The instrument course in the single engine track uses the Cessna 172. The multi engine instrument track uses both the 172 and the Piper Seminole. The single commercial uses the 172 and the Piper Arrow. The multi commercial uses the Seminole. Finally, our flight instructor course uses both the 172 and the Arrow.
