Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security Program CurriculumDegree Requirements
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Homeland Security (HS) has two tracks; the standard, 120 credit hour track consisting of the HS core curriculum, one area of concentration (students in the standard track need to choose either terrorism studies or emergency management as an area of concentration), and several selected supporting courses designed to give the student breadth and deeper understanding of security and defense topics. In addition, there is room in the standard track for students to acquire a minor (examples include international studies, occupational safety, business/finance, math, etc). The HS program also offers a 122 credit technical track in cyber security. Although anyone may choose to enroll in the cyber security track, cyber security students do not need to take an area of concentration. The cyber security track satisfies the Department of Defense's definition of a technical degree program and is designed to allow ROTC students on a technical scholarship to major in homeland security. In addition to the HS core, cyber security students learn about the intricacies of information assurance and network administration through a select 28 credit curriculum in software engineering. The HS program believes strongly in top quality, individualized advising. As such, the HS program boasts a robust and successful peer advising system. Each semester, HS faculty and HS seniors trained to be peer advisors conduct mass advising sessions before the formal registration period. These sessions allow all HS majors to complete registration requirements, answer all advising questions, and to organize their complete degree program. In addition to the HS faculty, for 2 weeks beyond mass advising, peer advisors hold office hours so that HS majors can continue to obtain state-of-the-art advising. Students may download a PDF of the required coursework for the standard HS track, the cyber security HS track, the HS minor and a program planner which is used as an advising tool to map one's degree progress from the beginning through graduation. Students enrolled in either the standard HS or Cyber Security HS track will need to complete an internship: CEHS 396 for 2 or more credits (which requires tuition). The HS faculty strongly encourage internships to be taken between either the sophomore and junior year or between the junior and senior year. The ERAU Office of Career Services works closely with the HS program to facilitate the students internship experience.
